AMD ISN't just buying from TSMC, TSMC is buying EPYC chips from AMD

TSMC has announced that it's using AMD EPYC processors to power workloads for its manufacturer. Yup, TSMC is using chips it has produced to make the chips it produces. To be reasonable, this is a recent upgrade to its data centers, so it's not like it had to partake in time travel to achieve this ostensibly paradoxical situation.

Just in case it wasn't open-and-shut, TSMC is non a half-size company—over 50,000 masses work for the manufacturing giant, across sites in Taiwan, Europe, Japan, China, and the Unpartitioned States. TSMC is exploitation HPE's DL324 G10 platform, which runs 2nd-gen AMD EPYC 7702 CPUs with 64 cores, a base clock of 2GHz, and a boost of 3.35GHz.

While TSMC and AMD already have a working relationship, apparently it wasn't a given that it would function AMD's hardware for its own servers, and had to show benefits over the competition. Something that IT apparently managed due to the excellent power efficiency AMD EPYC offers thanks to TSMC's 7nm production process.

TSMC has intelligibly been impressed with its experiences with EPYC so far and plans to follow through two more data centers in 2021. It's likewise looking at the new EPYC 7F72 CPU for its manufacturing teams. These CPUs deliver 24 cores and a base clock of 3.2GHz, with the high clock speeds being the clincher here.

A closer working relationship between AMD and TSMC can exclusive mean good things for AMD going forward, although we doubt this would instantly lead to more preferential treatment. Although anything to get to a greater extent silicon out of TSMC would be receive—peculiarly GPUs, which receive been almost unthinkable to track down since the novel launch.

Alan has been writing about Personal computer tech since before 3D graphics cards existed, and still vividly recalls having to scrap with MS-DOS just to get games to encumbrance. He fondly remembers the killer combo of a Matrox Millenium and 3dfx Voodoo, and seeing Lara Croft in 3D first. He's very glad hardware has advanced as very much like it has though, and is particularly happy when putt the latest M.2 NVMe SSDs, AMD processors, and laptops done their paces. He has a long-lasting Magic: The Assembly obsession just limits this to MTG Area these years.
