Obtaining [ ]
Tridents are non craftable. A trident can exist obtained simply when dropped by a drowned.
Mob boodle [ ]
fifteen% of drowned in Bedrock Edition (6.25% in Java Edition) spawn with a trident of random durability every bit their natural weapon, and just the drowned with a trident have a eight.v% chance of dropping the trident, increasing past 1% with each level of Looting.
But naturally-spawned drowned tin can spawn with a trident and have a chance of dropping one. In Coffee Edition, a trident held by a drowned has a take a chance to exist enchanted, but the trident'southward enchantments have no effects for drowned.[1]
Thrown tridents [ ]
Tridents thrown onto the ground by a histrion can exist picked up; however, tridents thrown by drowned cannot be picked upwardly, like to arrows shot by skeletons.
Usage [ ]
Drowned [ ]
fifteen% of drowned in Boulder Edition, and vi.25% in Coffee Edition, spawn with a trident every bit its natural weapon. Information technology throws the trident at its opponent every 1.5 seconds, dealing 9 damage in normal difficulty. A drowned can throw unlimited tridents, and these tridents cannot be picked upward by the player.
A villager tin can be turned into a zombie villager if it is killed past a trident thrown by a drowned: the chance of conversion is 0% on Easy difficulty, 50% on Normal, and 100% on Hard and Hardcore.
In Bedrock Edition, a drowned tin can use the trident'due south melee attack if its target is within 3 blocks. The melee attack deals 9 damage.
Melee set on [ ]
Pressing attack while belongings a trident deals damage to both mobs and players. Tridents deal 9 melee damage. A successful striking consumes immovability of the trident.
Ranged attack [ ]
Pressing and holding use while holding a trident charges it. When released at full charge, the trident is thrown and deals damage to whatsoever entity information technology hits. It flies on a ballistic trajectory similar to that of an arrow, but at fourscore% strength. If the trident hits a cake, it sticks to the block. If it hits an entity, information technology bounces off the entity and lands nearby. Information technology is too blocked by shields and can exist retrieved once it lands in the ground. Thrown tridents can trigger wooden buttons, wooden force per unit area plates, and target blocks. A trident tin be thrown at a chorus bloom or pointed dripstone to break it, which causes the block to be dropped as its corresponding item.
In Bedrock Edition and Java Edition Combat Examination iv, tridents can exist shot by dispensers regardless of enchantment.
Tridents enchanted with Loyalty return to the thrower after hitting an entity[ Java Edition simply ]/hitting and bouncing off an entity then hitting a block[ Boulder Edition only ] [2] or but a block. A Loyalty-enchanted trident fired from a dispenser just sticks to the block it strikes. College levels of enchantment consequence in shorter recovery times. In Coffee Edition, throwing a trident enchanted with Loyalty into the void destroys it, while in Bedrock Edition it automatically returns to the actor. Tridents (if enchanted with Loyalty), can take fire harm simply yet render to the player if thrown in lava. This is especially helpful in the Nether should the player be using a trident instead of a bow. If a trident enchanted with Loyalty attempts to return to a player with no bachelor inventory space, the trident floats nearly the role player until inventory space becomes available.
Thrown tridents take ane immovability damage, regardless of whether information technology hit an entity or not. Tridents with ane immovability remaining cannot be thrown.
Tridents enchanted with Riptide launch the actor a certain distance when thrown, with the distance increasing for higher enchantment levels. They can exist thrown merely if the thespian is standing in water, or if it is raining on the block they are standing on. If the player charges it but walks into a nearby dry area, the charge is canceled. If the histrion throws a Riptide trident and collides with a mob, the mob takes melee harm (including critical damage if the player is falling). In Java Edition tridents enchanted with Riptide have one immovability damage upon throwing, and lose an boosted ane durability if information technology collides with an entity on both editions.
Tridents enchanted with Channeling summon a lightning commodities if in that location is a thunderstorm, although only upon striking a mob or player continuing in the rain every bit well as a lightning rod placed in the rain.
Unlike other projectiles, the trident does not dull down when thrown through h2o or lava.
In Java Edition, the Impaling enchantment affects all h2o mobs. In Boulder Edition, it deals extra damage to players and mobs in water or rain.
Unlike arrows, thrown tridents do not despawn.[ Bedrock Edition only ] Tridents despawn after 60 seconds if they are non picked upwardly.[ Coffee Edition only ] [3]
- Magical damage
Using Riptide, nearby players or mobs deal splash damage within an 8.25×8.25×4.25 cubical area. It stacks with the Impaling enchantment and Strength result. Critical hits do not increase splash harm, but impact the target.
In Bedrock Edition, thrown tridents can harm the ender dragon while resting on the bedrock fountain. In Java Edition, they act simply like arrows — deflected, merely burn every bit if they had Flame.
Impairment [ ]
Thrown tridents and splashes deal eight damage. The impairment remains the same regardless of the trident's speed. It has a faster charging speed than a bow or crossbow (barring the Quick Accuse enchantment.)
Java Edition [ ]
In Java Edition, tridents have an assault speed of ane.i and take ~0.91 seconds to recover.
Assail | Melee | Melee (critical) | Range |
---|---|---|---|
Attack damage | nine | 13.5 × 6.75 | eight |
Damage/Second (DPS)[note 1] | 9.9 | 14.3 | ? |
Lifetime damage inflicted[note 2] | 2250 × 1125 | 3375 × 1687.five | 2000 × thou |
Durability | 250 |
- ↑ This does non take travel time into account
- ↑ The formula to find the full lifetime damage is Durability × Damage per hit = Lifetime damage minimum (e.k., 250 × 9 = 2250). It ignores enchantments and critical hits, and assumes the trident is at maximum charge
Boulder Edition [ ]
In Boulder Edition, tridents have no attack cooldown and do the following damage:
Assail | Melee | Range |
---|---|---|
Attack damage | 9 | 8 |
Lifetime damage inflicted [note 1] | 2259 × 1129.5 | 2008 × 1004 |
Durability | 251 |
- ↑ The formula to find the total lifetime impairment is Immovability × Harm per hit = Lifetime impairment minimum. It excludes enchantments and critical hits.
Elytra [ ]
A trident with the Riptide enchantment can be used to propel a role player with a pair of elytra, but but in rainy weather, during snowy conditions in certain biomes[4] or while the thespian is in a body of water. This does non eat any durability.
Impaling impairment [ ]
In Java Edition, the Impaling enchantment deals extra harm to all water mobs. In Bedrock Edition and in Coffee Edition Gainsay Test iii, information technology deals extra impairment to all players and mobs in water or rain.
Level | Increase | Melee | Ranged |
---|---|---|---|
I | adds two.5 × 1.25 | eleven.5 × five.75 | 10.5 × 5.25 |
II | adds 5 | 14 × vii | 13 × 6.5 |
Iii | adds 7.5 × 3.75 | 16.5 × eight.25 | 15.5 × vii.75 |
4 | adds 10 | 19 × 9.5 | 18 × 9 |
V | adds 12.5 × 6.25 | 21.5 × ten.75 | 20.5 × 10.25 |
Enchantments [ ]
Tridents have a base enchantability of ane and can receive the following enchantments:
Name | Max Level | Method |
---|---|---|
Loyalty[notation 1] | Three | |
Channeling[note 1] | I | |
Riptide[annotation 1] | III | |
Impaling | V | |
Unbreaking | III | |
Mending | I | |
Curse of Vanishing | I |
- Notes
- ↑ a b c Loyalty and Channeling are mutually exclusive from Riptide, but non from each other.
Repairing [ ]
Tridents have the same immovability as an iron sword. Whenever a trident deals damage, its immovability decreases by 1.
Tridents can be repaired by:
- combining two damaged tridents on a crafting table or the ii×2 inventory filigree, which removes whatsoever enchantments.
- combining two damaged tridents in a grindstone, which removes any enchantments except for Curse of Vanishing and Expletive of Binding
- combining a damaged trident with another trident on an anvil, which preserves enchantments.
- applying the Mending enchantment.

Trivia [ ]
- If a player throws a Loyalty-enchanted trident and the player'due south inventory subsequently fills, the trident hovers around or through the thespian's pare until an inventory slot opens, which it fills immediately. Multiple tridents can exist 'queued' to re-enter the player'southward inventory in this manner.
- In Java Edition in Artistic style, sword enchantments can be applied to tridents. This includes Sharpness, Fire Aspect, and Looting. Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods increases their harm against their specific mobs, as well.[ more data needed ]
- Thrown tridents pass through under portal blocks without existence transported to the Nether or the Overworld.
- Using a Trident enchanted with Riptide while riding an entity will abolish the charge and do nothing.
